Yellowing or UV-Faded Garage Floors?
A garage floor coating should maintain its appearance for years, but some coatings begin to yellow, fade, or discolor with exposure to sunlight. If areas near your garage door look noticeably different from the rest of the floor, UV exposure may be affecting the coating.
See why some garage floor coatings change color over time and how Ohio Garage Interiors replaces them with a durable, UV-stable polyaspartic system designed to maintain its appearance.

Why Garage Floor Coatings Yellow or Fade
UV Exposure
Sunlight enters your garage every time the door is open, exposing the floor to ultraviolet (UV) rays. Over time, coatings that are not UV-stable can react to this exposure and begin to yellow, fade, or change color.
The effect is often most noticeable near the garage door, where the floor receives the most direct sunlight. This can leave portions of the floor looking noticeably different from areas farther inside the garage.
Epoxy Coatings
Traditional epoxy coatings are more vulnerable to yellowing and fading from prolonged sunlight exposure. As UV rays affect the coating, a process often referred to as ambering can cause clear or lightly colored surfaces to develop a yellow or discolored appearance.
While the floor may still be functional, the uneven color can make a once-clean garage floor look aged or worn.
Uneven Sun Exposure
UV damage does not always affect the entire floor evenly. Areas closest to windows and open garage doors typically receive more sunlight than protected sections of the garage.
This uneven exposure can create distinct color differences across the floor, with exposed areas appearing yellowed or faded while protected areas retain more of their original appearance.
Signs Your Garage Floor Has UV Damage
UV-related discoloration can develop gradually, making it easy to overlook at first. Over time, the difference between exposed and protected areas becomes more noticeable.
Common signs include:
- Yellow or amber discoloration in the coating
- Faded or washed-out areas near the garage door
- Uneven color between sun-exposed and shaded sections
- Changes in the appearance of decorative flakes or the clear top coat
- A garage floor that looks older or more worn despite being relatively new
Unlike dirt or staining, UV-related discoloration typically cannot be cleaned away because the change has occurred within the coating itself.
Why UV Damage Becomes More Noticeable Over Time
A garage floor receives repeated UV exposure throughout its life. If the coating is not designed to withstand sunlight, the appearance can continue to change as that exposure adds up.
- Direct sunlight repeatedly exposes areas near garage doors and windows to UV rays.
- Uneven exposure can create increasingly noticeable differences between shaded and unshaded areas.
- Continued aging can make yellowing or fading more pronounced over time.
Cleaning the floor may remove surface dirt, but it cannot reverse discoloration caused by the coating itself. Applying another non-UV-stable coating over the existing surface can eventually lead to the same problem.
For a longer-lasting solution, the existing coating needs to be properly removed and replaced with a system designed to resist UV-related color changes.
How We Fix a Yellowing or UV-Faded Garage Floor
At Ohio Garage Interiors, we don’t simply cover discoloration with another layer of coating. We properly prepare the floor and install a UV-stable polyaspartic system designed to maintain its appearance over time.
Our process includes:
Existing Coating Removal
We remove the old coating so the new flooring system can be installed over properly prepared concrete rather than simply covering the discoloration.
Industrial Diamond Grinding Preparation
We mechanically grind the concrete to open the surface and create the proper profile for a strong, long-lasting bond.
Crack and Surface Repair
Cracks, pits, and other concrete damage exposed during preparation are repaired before the new coating system is installed.
Two-Day Installation Process
Our two-day process allows the epoxy base coat time to properly bond and cure before we apply the durable, UV-stable polyaspartic topcoat.
UV-Stable Polyaspartic Coating System
We install a durable polyaspartic flooring system designed to resist UV-related yellowing and fading while standing up to road salt, chemicals, abrasion, and everyday garage use.
The Result
Replacing a yellowed or faded coating does more than refresh the appearance of your garage. It gives you a flooring system designed for the conditions your garage actually faces.
Homeowners gain:
- A UV-stable surface designed to resist yellowing and fading
- More consistent color throughout the garage
- Durable protection against road salt, chemicals, moisture, and everyday wear
- A professionally prepared and installed floor designed for long-term performance
- An industry-leading lifetime warranty against peeling and delamination
With the right materials and installation process, your garage floor can maintain its clean, finished appearance for years to come.
